Saving and Fixing Problems

The dashboard points out problems in an adaptive videobot as you build it, and the whole setup is checked again when you publish, so a broken rule or an incomplete question never reaches viewers. This page explains where problems show up, what saving cleans up for you, and what to look at when the videobot does not behave as expected.

Where Problems Show Up

WhereWhat you see
The slide's Adaptive blockMessages for problems on this slide. A problem with one field, such as Maximum picks, shows under that field. The rest are listed at the top of the block.
A rules listA red badge, such as 2 issues, on the row of each rule with a problem. Open the rule to read the messages at the bottom of its panel.
When you saveThe draft is always saved, problems included. If the adaptive setup has problems, the message says how many still have to be fixed before you can publish.
When you publishIf anything would not work, nothing is published. A Can't publish yet window lists every problem with the name of its slide. Review opens the first slide with a problem.

The checks only run while Adaptive mode is on. With it off, the videobot saves and publishes as a regular videobot.

Problems That Block Publishing

These have to be fixed before the videobot can be published. The most common ones:

ProblemHow to fix it
A question has no answer options.Add options to the question, or set the slide's role back to Content.
A question that decides with rules has no slide to continue to.Choose a slide in Otherwise, continue to under When the question is answered.
A button that decides with rules has no target to fall back to.Open the button and set its Link to target.
A rule has no destination.Open the rule and choose a destination under Then.
A rule leads back to its own slide.Choose another destination under Then.
A rule plays more steps than allowed.Remove steps under Then. See Limits.
Minimum picks or Maximum picks is above the number of options the viewer can pick, or below the other.Change the pick limits, or add options.
An Exact or Ordered question has no option marked correct, or more or fewer than the pick limits allow.Change Counts as correct on the options, or the pick limits. Or set Grading to Every pick.
The correct answer includes a button the viewer cannot pick, such as a link.Switch off Counts as correct on that button.
A link button is one of a question's options.Remove it from the question's options. Links cannot be answers.
A condition group is empty.Add a condition to the group, or remove the group.
A button that is an option of a multiple choice or ordered question has rules.Move the rules from the option to the question's When the question is answered list.

Points, Points for the exact answer, Minimum picks and Maximum picks take whole numbers only. A decimal is not kept.

What Saving Cleans Up for You

When you delete a slide, a button, a form or a link, adaptive settings that pointed at it would lead nowhere. Saving removes them: a rule that leads to or checks the deleted item is removed whole, and so are the rules on a deleted slide or button, and the scoring of a deleted button. A section that no longer exists is cleared from its slides. Until you save, a deleted destination reads (deleted) in the rules list. No notice is shown for this cleanup, so after a large delete, check the rules on the slides around it.

Deleting Slides and Buttons

  • Deleting a slide that rules lead to asks you to confirm first, with a message such as "2 adaptive gates and 3 rules point at these slides. Saving will remove them." In the flow view, the same message appears as a warning after the slide is deleted. Rules that only check the slide in a condition are not counted.
  • Deleting the slide a question continues to clears that question's Otherwise, continue to. The question keeps its answers and its rules, but the videobot cannot be published until you choose a new slide.
  • Deleting a button removes its scoring and its rules. Rules that check whether it was picked are removed when you save.
  • Duplicate copies the slide's adaptive settings to the new slide, including its question, scoring and rules, both in the slide panel and when you duplicate several selected slides from the slide list. Conditions in the copied rules that checked the original slide check the copy instead.
  • Copy, which copies a slide to another videobot, leaves the adaptive settings behind and tells you so: "Adaptive settings are not copied with the slide."

Product Card Slides

A slide whose options type is Product Cards cannot carry adaptive settings. The Adaptive block is hidden while the slide shows product cards, and any settings it had are ignored by the player. Switch the options type back to Buttons to use them again.

When the Videobot Does Not Behave as Expected

What happensWhat to check
A rule never routes; the viewer always gets the default destination. In the Preview, check that the rule has a destination under Then, and that the slide's Adaptive block shows no problems: either one makes the Preview use the default destination. On the live videobot, check that it is published: viewers get the published version. See Save, Preview and Publish.
You published, but viewers still see the old behavior.Viewers who were already in the videobot keep the version they started with until their session ends. Close the videobot and open it again, and allow a couple of minutes for the new version to reach everyone.
The wrong rule wins.Rules are checked top to bottom and the first match wins. Move the more specific rule above the more general one.
A rule with is not or is not one of does not match a viewer who skipped a question.A condition about a question the viewer has not answered is never true. Add A question was answered is No as a separate rule. See Fields.
A multi-step rule stops after the first step. The next step waits for the video of the current slide to end. If the viewer presses a button in the meantime, the remaining steps are dropped.
The viewer sees {{score}} as typed. The slide is not a Completion slide and Score during the journey is off. Switch it on in the Settings tab, or move the text to a Completion slide.
The score shows "…" and never loads.Nothing on the viewer's path carries points yet, so there is no score. Give some options or buttons on that path Points.
A question says "Your answer has been recorded" and cannot be changed. The viewer already answered it. Switch on Viewer can change the answer later if they should be able to change it. After a Completion slide, no answer can be changed.
A question says "This questionnaire is complete" and cannot be answered. The viewer has reached a Completion slide, which makes the result final. To let viewers review their answers first, add a review slide with section progress before the Completion slide. To let them try again afterwards, add a button that leads to Start over.
A slide shows no section progress, or the toggle is missing.Show section progress only appears on Content and Question slides with Show a panel on, and only when the videobot has sections. The progress loads when the viewer enters the slide.
Tapping a section in section progress goes to the wrong slide. It goes to the section's first slide in the order of the Content tab. Move that slide, or change which slides belong to the section.
A button's rules list has no Otherwise, continue to row.One of its rules uses Always, so every viewer matches a rule. The button's Link to is still used if the rules cannot be checked in time.
A Completion slide shows only the video and its buttons.Show a panel is off on that slide. The result is still recorded. Switch it on to show the score card.
Pressing a second scored button on a Content slide adds nothing.A Content slide is answered once. Only the first scored button the viewer presses counts.
Rules stop working after the viewer reaches a Completion slide. The result is final from then on, and rules only run on that Completion slide's buttons. Anywhere else, buttons and questions go to their default destination. Use Start over for a new attempt.
A section reads Not completed although the viewer answered all of its questions.A section is completed only once the viewer has seen every slide in it. Take slides that only some viewers see, such as a recap, out of the section.
The score card shows "Something went wrong. Please try again later."The result could not be loaded, usually because of the connection. It is fetched again when the viewer reloads the page or comes back to the slide.
